The Newcomers Guide to Model RailwaysReview date: 2010-08-23 Rating: 8 out of 10The book consists of 144 pages. The first 5 chapters (54 pages) are informative but condensed and details the construction of a large `L' girder fixed to the wall type layout, the laying of the track etc. But has very little information on the visual appearance of the buildings, landscape etc.
Chapters 6 to 10 (75 pages) are extremely informative and deals with the electrical side of the layout, including DCC wiring for both track and signals. The remaining pages include the Index, Glossary etc.
Summary: I feel that since the book is aimed at the newcomer, a simpler layout to construct should have been included, because the method of construction used for the layout shown within the book is really only suitable for the advanced modeller. For me it is the electrical chapters that make this book worthwhile, and therefore this book will join my small but selected library of model railway books that I feel are worth collecting.

Reviews
Starting in model railways using DCCReview date: 2010-03-18 Rating: 8 out of 10I have just started in model railways as a hobby.I had a train set as a boy but nothing since. I am attracted by DCC way of running the models. I have picked up bits of info on DCC from various sources so when I saw a book which covered the basics of setting up a layout + a section on DCC I bought it. It does the job well. My only down side was confusion on the electrical set up. There is a chapter on electrics which deals with analogue and another chapter that deals with DCC electrics. Some of the installations in analogue do not seem to be covered in DCC.
Apart from this a very good buy for a starter with good practical advice.Buy this book.Review date: 2010-02-28 Rating: 10 out of 10This is a first class book, that everyone who is new to railway modelling should read. It is easy to understand and the diagrams are easy to follow. Many things that might have caused a beginner problems are explained in detail, especially for example, the wiring of points when using DCC. I read the book from cover to cover as soon as it arrived. A very good read and certainly worth the money.Best Model Railway Book I Have ReadReview date: 2010-02-24 Rating: 10 out of 10I have bought this book after viewing the authors website. The site is very useful but having a book in your hand when you are working on something as intricate as a model railway is a great help. It is the first book that I have came across which treats you as an adult. the book is written in both an expressive and interesting way that allows you to grasp the theory very quickly. I found the step by step photographs along with the simple text a great help. There have been many books written about this subject over the years (and I have bought quite a few of them) but this example is by far the most informative. If you are thinking of taking up this wonderful hobby then I strongly suggest you buy this book and learn the basics the correct way from the start.
